No-one wants a pest infestation in their Gold Coast home, especially when the insects involved are cockroaches. In addition to the repulsive creepy sound they make as they are dashing across the floors or walls of your home, they carry of number of potential diseases. The team at Bug Squad has compiled a list of what you should know about cockroaches that pest control experts like ourselves deal with on a daily basis – so you don’t have to!
Disease
Cockroaches do not spread disease directly through biting like a mosquito, for example. If they’re carrying disease it is spread when people come into contact with a cockroach or consume something that has been touched by these bugs. Shockingly, cockroaches have been known to carry all of the following diseases:
- Typhoid Fever
- Cholera
- Leprosy
- Gastroenteritis
- Salmonellosis
- Listeriosis
- Dysentery
- Campylobacteriosis
- Giardia
- Plague
Cockroaches have also been known to trigger allergies, including asthma, and to have spread bacteria such as E. coli.
The Spread of Disease
Even if you don’t see them, there are ways to identify a cockroach infestation. This is mainly through cockroach droppings, which you will mainly find in draws and cupboards as well as near cracks in your walls or floors. Cockroaches live in sewers, drains, gutters, cesspits and rubbish bins. This is where they come into contact with a range of bacteria and disease, while the infectious microbes attach to the bodies of the insects and disperse around your home.
As a result, these diseases can circulate through their droppings, their salvia and their vomit. So, whatever the afflicted cockroach has come in contact with is potentially contagious.
